A Crescent City resident hopes to unseat an elected official who has been serving the city for nearly 40 years.

On Monday, Diane Sykes filed her intent to run for the Group 4 seat on the Crescent City Commission, according to the Putnam County Supervisor of Elections Office.

Incumbent Harry Banks, who has served in the position for about 36 years, has yet to file.

As of Friday, she is the only candidate in the race.

Sykes is no stranger to the election ballot. According to county records, she sought the Group 1 seat in 2018, the mayor’s position in 2016 and the Group 4 seat against Banks in 2015.

If Sykes wins the 2024 election, it would be her first time serving as an elected official in Putnam County.

If Sykes is the only Group 4 candidate after qualifying ends in June, she will automatically be elected into office. If there are other candidates, the contest will be on the Nov. 5 general election ballot.
