A new candidate has entered the fight to claim a Palatka City Commission seat its holder will vacate after her current term ends.

Annie Henderson Davis filed her campaign paperwork last month as she began her bid to win the Group 1 commission seat, according to the Supervisor of Elections Office. Davis will face off in the nonpartisan commission contest against Vito Russo, according to the Elections Office.

Despite incumbent Tammie McCaskill launching her reelection campaign last year, she withdrew from the race in December, citing the public’s hostility toward commissioners during the search for a new city manager.

The qualifying period to stay in the race takes place in June. If Davis and Russo are the only candidates, they will face off in the Nov. 5 election.

If there are three or more Group 1 candidates by the end of qualifying, they will compete in the Aug. 20 primary.

If one person gets at least 50% of the vote plus an additional vote, that person will win their election bid and there will be no need for a general election contest.

If that scenario doesn’t occur, the two candidates with the most votes will do battle in November.
