4th candidate files for District 1 county commission seat

Another Republican has filed his intent to represent South Putnam County residents on the Board of County Commissioners.

According to the Supervisor of Elections Office, J.R. Newbold III turned in his paperwork last month to run for the District 1 board seat.

County Commissioner Bill Pickens, the Republican who currently occupies the District 1 seat, has previously announced he would not be seeking reelection in the 2024 election cycle.

Newbold has entered an already crowded pool of District 1 candidates. On Thursday evening, the Elections Office’s website listed Douglas Hays and Jeovanny “Geo” Palencia as Republican candidates and showed Harry Banks as the lone Democrat hopeful.

If more than one Republican is still in the running after the qualifying period ends in June, the three Republican candidates will compete in the primary for a spot on the Nov. 5, 2024, general election ballot.
