Construction is underway for a new Dollar General store in Palatka that was formerly the site of an animal hospital.

The store is slated to open near the intersection of Palm and Crill avenues later this year depending on construction progress, according to Katie Ellison, senior manager for Dollar General Corp. public relations.

Dollar General currently has 17 stores in Putnam County, including six serving Palatka, Ellison said. The Goodlettsville, Tennessee-based corporation has more than 16,000 stores nationwide, all of which are
ompany-owned.

Ellison said the new store will offer fresh fruits and vegetables along with other merchandise typically found at Dollar General.

“Our customers are at the center of all that we do, and meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority when choosing store locations,” Ellison said. “In selecting store sites, we take a number of factors into consideration, carefully evaluating each potential new store location to ensure we can continue to meet our customers’ price, value and selection needs.

“We further strive to provide convenience for customers who may not have affordable nearby retail stores.”

The store will offer fresh produce such as lettuce, tomatoes, apples and more, according to Ellison.

“The produce set offers the top 20 items typically sold in traditional grocery stores and covers approximately 80% of produce categories most grocery stores carry,” Ellison said.

The store will have up to 10 employees, according to Ellison. Residents can apply for positions online at dollargeneral.com/careers.

The 3201 Crill Ave. site was formerly the location for River City Veterinary Hospital, which moved to a new facility at 6050 St. Johns Ave.

A Family Dollar retail store is located near the site at 3205 Crill Ave.
