Rides, pageants, more to be featured at fair

It’s almost time for Samantha Fairlie to give the OK to open the gates for this year’s Putnam County Fair, which will start at 5 p.m. Friday.

“We are all excited about the fair,” said Fairlie, the fairgrounds and rental manager. “We have made many improvements to the grounds and are excited to have our newest entertainment, Rosaire’s Racing Pigs, joining us for two shows a day during the week and three on the weekends.”

The fair will last until March 30, with operating hours from noon – 9 a.m. March 23 and 30, noon – 7 p.m. March 24 and from 5–9 p.m. March 25-29 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds, 118 Fairgrounds Road in East Palatka.

General admission is $10 each day with the exception of Can Day, where any fair-goer who brings a canned food item will be admitted for $1 on Sunday and $5 on Wednesday.

Wristbands for unlimited midway rides will cost $20 on March 22 and 26-29. The cost for wristbands will be $25 on March 23-24 and 30 but will cost $15 on March 25.

The Putnam County Fair Pageant kicks off at 6 p.m. with the baby, toddler and petite competitors vying for the coveted titles. The second part of the pageant will start at 6 p.m. Saturday for little, junior, junior teen, teen and miss categories.

Other than the rides, some of the highlights of the fair will include Whip Cracking, Whips & Tricks at 2 p.m. Sunday followed by the American Beef Heifer Show at 6 p.m.

Monday is Military Appreciation Day, where veterans will receive 50% off general admission with a valid ID.

Tuesday is the Market Swine Show at 6 p.m.

Senior Day will be from 10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Wednesday, and the Market Steer Show will start at 7 p.m. that same day.

The Continental Beef Heifer show will start at 7 p.m. March 28. The annual Youth Livestock Auction will begin at 7 p.m. March 29, and the Pullet & Berry Silent Auction will be from 5-8 p.m. that day.

The last day of the fair will see the Youth Rabbit Show starting at 12:30 p.m. and poultry awards at 5 p.m.

Other entertainment and activities will include Livestock Lane, Eudora’s Petting Zoo, Pirate Man Dan, and Circus Incredible.

The Expo building at the fairgrounds will feature fine arts created by adults and children, as well as needlework, crafts, woodworking and antiques.

There will also be an exhibit for adult and youth bakery, candy, canning and more.
