A two-term elected official has entered the running to win another four years on the Putnam County School Board.

San Mateo resident Sandra Gilyard filed her candidacy papers Monday in her bid to retain her nonpartisan Group 3 school board seat, according to the Putnam County Supervisor of Elections Office.

Election records show Gilyard’s only opponent as of Friday is East Palatka resident Jackie Porter, who had never run for elected office in Putnam County before the 2024 cycle.

Gilyard was first elected to the school board in 2016 and won her reelection bid four years later.

Group 3 candidates will face off in the Aug. 20 primary. If there are only two hopefuls in the running by that time, the winner will be decided then.

If there are three or more Group 3 candidates in the primary, the winner will be whoever receives at least 50% of the vote plus at least one additional vote. If no candidate wins that many votes, the top two candidates will face off in the Nov. 5 general election.
