Area schools cancel classes today, Friday

Schools, municipalities and county offices in Putnam County have adopted various closure procedures in anticipation of a potential Hurricane Matthew landfall.

County Administrator Rick Leary said he is reviewing information he gets from Putnam County Emergency Management and will use that information to determine whether to close offices Friday.

“We are not closing (today),” Leary said. “We are not certain we’ll close Friday. The preliminary information is that the winds are going to start picking up (this) evening.”

Leary said he and emergency officials will decide today whether to close Friday.

The city of Palatka is employing a similar method, according to City Manager Terry Suggs.

He said city officials would meet 10 a.m. today to decide how long city offices would stay open today and if closing Friday would be necessary.

Crescent City Manager Patrick Kennedy said the South Putnam city would also be open today but use today to decide when or if to close for the storm.

In an email Wednesday afternoon, Interlachen officials said the town “will close on Friday due to the hurricane.”

The Putnam County School District, St. Johns River State College and First Coast Technical College are closed today and, as of Wednesday afternoon, remain closed until at least Sunday.
