John W. Bitting

John William Bitting, 84, of Pomona Park, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 in Green Cove Springs.

John W. (Jack) was born on Dec. 14, 1929 to the late John and Pauline (Schlatterer) Bitting in Maple
Shade, N.J. He was a member of the Lake Lodge 72 Free and Accepted Masons and the Moose Lodge 1641, both in Crescent City. He was a Morocco Shriner of the Morocco Temple and a member of Bass Capital Shrine Club in Crescent City.

He is survived by significant other, Sandra Britt of Satsuma, his sisters, Alice Coonse of Hickory, N.C., Rose Esplle of Culpepper, Va.

A memorial service is planned at the Moose Lodge 1641 in Crescent City on Wednesday, April 23, 11 a.m. with Masonic rites to follow.

Watts Funeral Home and Cremation Center is entrusted to the arrangements.

Donnie Thompson

Donald George “Donnie” Thompson, 74, of Palatka, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka.

He was born in Palatka to William Ross “Bill” Thompson and Pauline Vera Pert Thompson. Donnie graduated from Palatka High School in 1958 where he was very active in sports. His love of sports continued throughout his life. Donnie was an avid Florida State Seminole fan. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Air Force. Donnie was a member of the Chattanooga, Tenn. boilermakers, which took him to various locations throughout the United States during the 1960’s and early 1970’s. He owned and operated Thompson Masonry Inc. for over 30 years. He participated in several local groups and clubs. Throughout his life, Donnie did many charitable jobs for local charities. He was a lover of nature and animals. Donnie will forever be remembered for his quick wit, kind words, helping others and his genuine smile.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Betty G. Thompson of Palatka, daughters, Darenda Thompson of St. Augustine, Deanna (Bill) French, Katy, Texas, Elise (Patrick) Barrett, Durham, N.C., and Elizabeth Marshall, Vidalia, Ga., six grandchildren, Ashley (Zach) Alexander, Megan Thompson, Taylor French, Gavin French, and Nicole Marshall, a sister, Pat (Claude) Caviness of St. Augustine, four nieces, Vicki Bartlam, Carol Whitham, Doneen Boyd and A.J. Thompson, four nephews, Rick Shiver, Gary Bonnelle, Bryan Thompson and Ken Thompson.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24 at Oak Hill West Cemetery in Palatka with the Rev. Russell Wright officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.

Richard E. Bowlby, 73, of East Palatka, fell asleep in death on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at the Northeast Florida Community Hospice in St. Augustine following an extended illness.

Margaret Ann Cunningham, 84, of East Palatka, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014 at her residence following an extended illness.

Myrtle Humphrey, 90, of Newark, N.J., entered the sunset of life on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at her residence.
