Tournament benefits Panther football

Friends and supporters of Palatka High football will want to be at the Municipal Course Saturday morning.

The Panther Booster Club is sponsoring a benefit scramble, with proceeds earmarked to purchase jerseys for the Panthers.

Cost to play is $60 per person. Play begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Match Play coming. Members of the Palatka Men’s Golf Association wishing to get it on in a match play format need to sign up for the upcoming Memorial Match Play Tournament.

The field is limited to the first 32 players to commit, with deadline to sign up May 31.

Defending champ is Lucas Bennett, who defeated Randy Werkheiser 3 and 2 for the 2015 title. For more information, call the MC pro shop at 329-0141…

Schiffty Shootout is June 18. The latest edition of the Schiffty Shootout returns June 18 to the Palatka Course.

Bearing the name of its originator, the late Jim Schiffbauer, the event is a two-man competition that features three, nine-hole formats. First nine holes is scramble, followed by nine holes of best ball and concluding with alternate shot.

Cost is $50 per man, and offers an optional Calcutta and skins game…

Junior Golf Clinics coming. Youngsters wanting to learn the basics of golf or to sharpen their skills will be heading to the MC for the upcoming Junior Golf Clinics. As always, there are four day clinics slated for June, July and August. The classes are slated for June 13-16, July 11-14 and Aug. 1-4.

Cost is $90 and each clinic is from 9 a.m. to noon. Providing the instruction are Paul Trettner, Tanner Tipton and Kyle Coleman. For more information call the clubhouse at 329-0141…

Ladies’ Play Day results. The format for the May 12 game was front nine score, less ½ handicap. Sandy Smith and Gen Alvers finished 1-2, while Smith also was closest to the pin on No. 18.

Last Thursday’s game for the Palatka Women’s Golf Association was back nine scores, less 1-2 handicap. This time Alvers was the champ and Pat Hain took runner-up. Joy Langston was CTP on No. 18.

The PWGA Championship Tournament was also completed as well, with Pat Hain and Sandy Smith finishing 1-2 in the Championship Flight, while Gen Alvers and Joyce Oliver were the top two finishers, respectively, in the First Flight.

The PWGA season winds up its 2016 season tomorrow, which will follow with an awards luncheon at Gator Landing at 12:45 p.m. All present and past members are invited for this Dutch treat…

Twilight Scramble results. Kevin Keith, Jerry Broadrick, John Skidmore and Daniel Picard shot seven under par to win last Thursday’s Twilight Scramble. The winners also picked up skins on Nos. 2, 3 and 6.

The nine-hole scramble is held every Thursday at the Municipal Course. Play begins at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $25… 

South Putnam news. Margy Fayard, Rosemary Dreesen, Ken Thompson and Jerry Peterson carded 30 to claim the May 13 scramble at Fruitland’s The Oaks Golf Club. Dreesen was CTP on No. 2.

On May 18 it was Ben Valdez, Larry McKenzie and Gary Carlisle taking the win with their 27 worksheet. Valdez was CTP on No. 2.
