People throughout Putnam County will honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a series of events Monday, the 22nd anniversary of the day that rocked the nation.

Putnam County Fire Rescue will host a remembrance ceremony beginning at 9:40 a.m. at the Riverfront Park, 102 N. First St. in Palatka.

There will also be a tribute at 10:30 a.m. in front of the flagpole at Welaka Town Hall, 400 Fourth Ave.

The Central Putnam Ministerial Association will host the annual Cry Out America Patriot’s Day 9/11 prayer service from noon – 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 501 Oak St. in Palatka.

Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church’s central campus, 4909 St. Johns Ave. in Palatka, will have a special recognition for first responders at 7 p.m.

The Rev. Karl Flagg of Mt. Tabor said Sept. 11 coincides with the church’s 154th anniversary, and Mt. Tabor would be remiss not to honor the first responders. He said no calling, whether becoming a first responder or serving the church, is more important than the other.

“It’s really one servant honoring and appreciating another servant,” Flagg said.

Deputy County Administrator J.R. Grimes, who oversees much of the county’s emergency management and fire rescue operations, plans to be at the riverfront ceremony. He said what happened Sept. 11, 2001, could happen to any first responder.

“They put in the ultimate sacrifice,” Grimes said. “It’s something we never need to forget.”
