Friday is the beginning of the annual Putnam County Fair, a nine-day event that draws thousands of local residents and visitors to East Palatka.

The event – which takes place at the Putnam County Fairgrounds, 118 Fairgrounds Road – will be open Friday, as well as Monday through Friday next week, from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m., according to the fair’s website.

On Saturday and March 25, the fair is open noon – 11 p.m., and it will take place noon – 9 p.m. Sunday.

The fair will offer a variety of activities for people of all ages. There will be rides, animal shows, food vendors, livestock shows, a petting zoo and performances from local groups, among other activities.

Wayne McClain, a member of the Putnam County Fair Authority board of directors, said he is looking forward to the fair, especially some of the new items.

The fair will have a circus for the first time, he said, and there will be two new rides because there is more space for them.

“We're really excited about the fair kicking off tomorrow,” McClain said Thursday. “We're excited about the fair because we have some new, added features.”

Crews work on last-minute adjustments Thursday to get ready for opening day of the Putnam County Fair.

With Friday being St. Patrick’s Day, people who show up wearing their favorite green and/or shamrock attire can enter for a chance to win the Day at the Fair Basket. The prize includes four general admission tickets, four unlimited ride wristbands and $100 in Fair Food Bucks to use any one day between March 18-25.

The name will be pulled 9:30 p.m. Friday, and the victor doesn’t need to be present to win, fair officials said.

Senior Day will be Wednesday when people 60 and older can visit for free beginning 10 a.m. Lunch and other activities will be offered, but the midway and food booths will not be open.

General admission for the fair will be $10 for people 6 and older, and free for children 5 and younger. Anyone who brings one canned food item to the fair Sunday and Wednesday will pay only $1.
