A law enforcement official is vying for a Putnam County judge seat in the 2024 election cycle.

Alex Sharp, who works as the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office’s legal counsel, submitted his intent to run for the county judge Group 1 seat Monday.

The seat is nonpartisan, and he is running to replace Judge Anne Marie Gennusa. She replaced former Judge Joe Boatwright earlier this year after Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Boatwright to the 5th District Court of Appeal.

Gennusa has also filed her intent to run for the Group 1 seat. This position has a six-year term, according to Supervisor of Elections Charles Overturf III. Judge Elizabeth “Libby” Morris is not up for election until 2026.

Voting for the Group 1 race will take place during the primary in August 2024. If only two people run for the seat, Overturf said, the winner will be decided then.

If more than two candidates run for office, the winner will be decided in the November election if no one in the primary receives 50% of the vote plus an additional vote, the elections supervisor said.

The general election will be Nov. 5, 2024.
