16-year-old bicyclist killed in collision with car
A Pomona Park teenager died Tuesday after a vehicle struck him as he was attempting to cross a highway, the state Highway Patrol said.
Paul Shamblin, 16, was on a bicycle when he was struck by a Ford Taurus about 7:10 p.m. near U.S. 17 and East Main Street in Pomona Park, FHP said.
Shamblin was exiting a private driveway and attempting to cross U.S. 17 in a westward direction when the crash occurred, authorities said.
FHP said the vehicle, driven by Ilda Duarte, 48, of Crescent City, was traveling northbound on U.S. 17 before the front of the vehicle collided with Shamblin. Duarte remained on scene following the crash.
Shamblin was taken to the Putnam Community Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Alcohol was not a factor for Shamblin or Duarte, officials said.
Any charges related to the crash are pending the results of an investigation, FHP said.
