A FINANCIAL BOOST
Putnam Community Medical Center Volunteers Inc. presented its first scholarship of the year Tuesday, awarding one of the hospital’s employees with $1,000 to further her career.
Anna Cushman is a registered nurse in the hospital’s emergency department. Cushman, a 32-year-old St. Augustine resident, said she came to work at the hospital in June after earning her registered nursing certificate at St. Johns River State College in May.
Cushman plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing at SJR State and eventually pursue a master’s degree.
Cushman said she enjoys patient care and also wants to earn a critical care nursing certificate.
“I have some of the best patients,” she said. “I wouldn’t want to do anything else.”
Volunteer coordinator Rose Bellamy said the hospital volunteers would present three more scholarships this year.
“We try to choose (scholarship recipients) who would give back to our community,” Bellamy said. “They are designed for those who are on the last leg of their education.”
Scholarships are funded by profits at the hospital’s gift shop and additional fundraising efforts.
Cushman accepted her scholarship Tuesday during a presentation from hospital chief executive officer Chris Mosley, human resources director John Schneider, chief nursing officer Kari Bolin, Bellamy and volunteers.
