Plane crash claims 2

Experimental aircraft that malfunctioned took off from Deland airport

CRESCENT CITY — Two men were killed Wednesday morning after an experimental plane they were in malfunctioned and crashed in a fern farm south of Crescent City.

State Highway Patrol authorities said Thomas E. Stevens, 67, of Crescent City, and Joe A. Fyock, 62, of Orange City, left DeLand airport in a Challenger 2 Ultralight plane.

One witness said he saw the plane flying at about 9 a.m. when he heard a “pop.”

“Then, I saw pieces and parts coming off the plane,” Christopher Aylsworth.

Aylsworth said he saw a parachute, but it never opened.

Authorities said the crash occurred in the area of Old Highway 17 and Smiley Store Road.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating, and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the cause of the crash, troopers said.
