State forests announce trail closures due to heavy rains
Citing heavy rains, the Waccasassa Forestry Center announced closures of trails at Welaka and Etoniah Creek state forests.
The Indian Pond Run and Mud Spring trails are closed at Welaka State Forest until further notice. Indian Pond Run heading south is a right turn off of County Road 309 and about 1.5 miles long.
The Mud Spring Trail, a 2-mile stretch, begins near Welaka State Forest headquarters, 794 County Road 309. The recreation area near the St. Johns River will be closed.
In Florahome, Etoniah Creek State Forest closed a portion of the Red Camp Trail at the southeast of the forest and the Scrub Trail. Etoniah Creek spokeswoman Paula Lott said washouts were common on Scrub Trail.
“Because of the rain, Scrub Trail has always had been a problem because of the drainage,” Lott said. “We’re keeping people out so they don’t damage their vehicles.”
