William LaRue “Bill” Baxter, 83, of Palatka, passed from this life Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center following an extended illness.
Born in Granite City, Ill., he was a 1956 graduate of DePauw University in Green Castle, Ind. Bill moved from Santa Rosa, Calif., to Palatka in 1970 and began working as an environmental engineer at Georgia-Pacific. He retired from Georgia-Pacific as production manager following 32 years of service. Bill was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church and was past president of the Rotary Club of Palatka. He likewise assisted with Boy Scout Troop 62 at St. James.
In his leisure time, Bill enjoyed coin collecting, knives, working with bees, gardening and time in his greenhouse.
Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pat Baxter of Palatka; a son, Todd Baxter (Nora) of Riverton, Wyo.; two daughters, Tammy Baxter (John) of Palatka and Trisha Taris (Mike) of Fayetteville, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Kimberly Baxter, J.P. Baxter, Bradley Baxter, Josie Taris and Nicole Taris.
Memorial services celebrating Bill’s life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at St. James United Methodist Church with Pastor Glenda Brayman officiating. The Rotary Club of Palatka will serve as honorary pallbearers.
