Conner Lee “C.L.” Hughes

Conner Lee “C.L.” Hughes, 93, of Palatka, passed away Friday, July 6, 2018.

Conner Lee was born in Florahome to the Rev. Joseph D. and Hannah “Sallie” Brown Hughes. The family moved to Palatka, and he was educated in the Putnam County School District. He was a retired employee of Hudson Pulp & Paper Corp. (Georgia-Pacific), where he was employed for over 41 years, and was a self-employed farmer. He was a devoted Christian and held the position of chairman of deacons at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Jessie Mae Spells Hughes; daughter, Jackie; son, Ronald Lloyd Hughes; his parents, the Rev. Joseph D. Hughes and Hannah Sallie Brown Hughes; and siblings, the Rev. Buster Hughes Sr., Deacon Denart Hughes, Deacon I.D. Hughes, J. D. Hughes, Sarah Jones, Cleota Cain, Mattie Hughes, and Rebecca Douglas.

He is survived by his children, Lorraine Walker of Palatka, Ida (Robert) Clarke of Panama City, Sonya Hughes of Palatka, Constance (Larry) Cromartie of Tampa and Karen J. (Ret. Lt.) Cummings of Palatka; grandchildren, Natalie (Minister Erik) Bennett, Natarsha (Marcus Sr.) Baker, Clarence E. Hughes Jr., Stephanie L. Clarke, Dr. Marfreeia Y. Clark, A. Dontano Cromartie, Trenika Cromartie, Cheryl (Darryl) Jones, LaKisha L. Hughes, Marc B. Cummings, Jessica E. Cummings, Devin Cummings, Shaun Brown, Melvin Hughes, Rhonda Hughes, Yolanda Hughes, Kanekia Hughes, Talisa Jones, LaTasha Hughes, Byron Hughes, Kevin Hughes, Ronesha Hughes, Avis Hughes, Quinteria Brown, Daeron Brown and Jessica Hughes; 53 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other sorrowing family and friends.

Viewing will be 5–8 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2018, at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 395 Alabama Ave. in Palatka. A special farewell will be 7 p.m. The funeral service will be noon Saturday, July 14, 2018, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 719 Reid St. in Palatka, the Rev. James McGriff, pastor. His pastor, the Rev. Michael McKay, is eulogist.
