William Eugene “Gene” Stokes, 88, of Jacksonville, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, at Baptist Medical Center South in Jacksonville following a brief illness.
Born and raised in Jacksonville, Gene lived in East Palatka for 40 years prior to moving back to Jacksonville in 2018. He was a 1948 graduate of Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville and later attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, where he met his future wife. He served honorably in the Florida National Guard. At the age of 72, he retired as vice president from D.S.I. Forms in Palatka, where he worked for 24 years. He was an Eagle Scout and had been a part of the Boy Scouts for 50 years, serving as Scoutmaster for Troop 342 in Palatka for 15 years. He also served as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Palatka. He had varied interests including archeology and enjoyed assorted collections.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ella Stokes; a daughter, Dorie Stokes Cantrell; and a brother, John Stokes.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Miriam Stokes of Jacksonville; two sons, Robby Stokes (Sherry) of Jacksonville and Daniel Stokes (Doug Weatherford) of Dallas; a daughter, Vicki Stokes Andrews of Jacksonville; a brother, Bobby Stokes of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Robert Stokes, Raven Stokes, Jacqueline Boyter, Jesse Cantrell, Jonathan Andrews and Steven Andrews; four great grandchildren; and one on the way.
Calling hours will be 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. Funeral services will immediately follow at 5 p.m. with Pastor John Miles officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville.
