Linda H. Black

Linda Hines Black, 62, of Palatka, closed her eyes on Earth and opened them in Heaven on Monday, July 8, 2019, at her home in Palatka following an extended illness of cancer. 

She was born in Jacksonville and spent most of her life in Palatka. She had also lived in Hinesville, Ga., and Lantana. Linda was a 1975 graduate of Palatka South High School, where she played the clarinet and flute in the band and was a Bravette during her junior and senior years.

Linda married the love of her life, Michael John Black, on June 5, 1976. She began her career with St. Johns River Water Management District and worked there for 34 years. She received Employee of the Year as well as letters of recognition. She loved her church and her church family. Linda loved spending time with her family and friends and especially spending time with her grandchildren, whom she loved so much. They were the light of her life.

Linda had a kind, loving, forgiving spirit and was well-liked by all who knew her. She had an impact on everyone she met.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Jeanette Higginbotham, and aunt, June Gordon.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Mike Black of Palatka; son, Tyler Black (Yelena) of Northport; daughter, Jennifer Reed (Jesse) of Virginia Beach, Va.; father, W.L. Hines (Wesley Ann) of Palatka; eight grandchildren, Hannah, Sarah, Rachel, Eliyah and Tayla Black, all of Northport, Mikayla, Wyatt and Camryn Reed, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; brothers, Keith Higginbotham and Trent Higginbotham (Melissa), both of Palatka; and stepbrothers, Donnie Ansley and Johnny Ansley.

Services celebrating Linda’s life will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2019, at Grace Fellowship with Pastor Terry Wright and Chaplain Jakie Carmicle officiating. Burial will follow at Peniel Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2019 (today), at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.
