Marjorie T. Shanks
Marjorie Tooley Shanks, 80, of Palatka, began her eternal life Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, at her residence.
A native and lifelong resident of Palatka, she was the daughter of the late Otis C. and Irene (Stafford) Tooley and a 1953 graduate of Central Academy High School. After receiving her diploma, she continued her education at Florida A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education and a master’s degree from Florida A&M and the University of Florida in counseling and guidance.
Mrs. Shanks was a loyal and dedicated member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she served in many capacities including choir, steward, event planner and many more. She was an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Putnam County Political Activities, Retired Educators Association and other civic organizations. She retired after serving 30 years with the Putnam County School District.
Preceding her in eternal rest other than her parents are husband, the Rev. Rufus Shanks; brother, Otis Tooley Jr.; brother-in-law, Marshall Atkins Sr.; and nephew, Marshall Atkins Jr.
To cherish her memories are sisters, Carolyn T. Atkins of Gainesville and Deansy Tyler of New York; brother, Robert H. (Joy) Tooley of Cape Kennedy; sister-in-law, Loraine Tooley of Fort Worth, Texas; nephews, Mark Atkins of Atlanta, Bret Tooley of Melborne and Martin Tooley of Daytona; and a host of other relatives and loving friends.
Visitation of family and friends will be 5–8 p.m. (today) Friday, Oct. 21 at. D.A. Boyd & Sons Funeral Home, 924 Reid St. in Palatka and 10 a.m. until the hour of service Saturday, Oct. 22 at Bethel AME Church, 719 Reid St.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at Bethel AME Church, the Rev. James McGriff, pastor and eulogist. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Palatka.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of D.A. Boyd & Sons Funeral Home in Palatka.
