Verna Mae Griffey

Verna Mae Griffey, 87, of Lake Como and formerly or Ragland, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on July 3, 2018, at her home. 

She was born Dec. 3, 1930, at Ragland, W.Va., the daughter of the late William Thomas and Nancy Jane Duty Ferrell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, L.J. Griffey, who passed away in 1998; two grandchildren, Heather Totten and Rebecca Freeman; brothers, Sidney and Carew; and sister, Sarah Rose Ferrell.

Verna was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was often referred to as the glue that kept the family together. She enjoyed fishing, quilting and gardening. She was a member of College Road Church of Christ and was also a longtime member of Ragland Church of Christ. 

Those left behind to cherish her memories include her sons, William “Bill,” and wife, Judy Griffey, and Mark and wife, Tina Griffey, both of Crescent City; daughters, Ima Jean and husband, Larry Scarberry, of Jacksonville, Karen Totten of Lenore and Tabitha Griffey of Lake Como; brothers, Charles Ferrell of Massillon, Ohio, Tommy Ferrell of Crescent City, Chandis Ferrell of Beach City, Ohio, and John B. Ferrell of Massillon, Ohio; and sisters, Susie Magyar of Sardis, Ohio, and Ocie Steele of Massillon, Ohio. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, July 8 at Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jared Belcher officiating. Burial will follow in Duty Cemetery at Ragland, W.Va.
