College athletics: Founding AD, coach Tuten dies

William H. “Bill” Tuten, who launched the St. Johns River Junior College athletic program in 1958 and coached the basketball and golf teams to national tournament appearances, died Friday at Crestwood Nursing Center in Palatka after a lengthy illness. He was 87.

The SJR State gymnasium is named in honor of Tuten, who also coached the Vikings’ first baseball team, led the slowpitch softball team for a number of years and played a leadership role in the NJCAA. Son Billy Tuten is a former U.S. Public Links golf champion who played in the Masters and the U.S. Open.
