Local Golf: First-round pairings locked in for PMGA Memorial Match Play event

The pairings are set for the Palatka Men’s Golf Association annual Memorial Match Play Tournament, with plenty of players in both flights holding the firepower to take it all.

Opening round matches at the Municipal Course in Flight I (handicaps of 10 or lower) look like this: Tanner Tipton vs. Kevin Orr, Spanky Aaron vs. David DeHart, Randy Werkheiser (defending champ) vs. Jeff McClellan, Reese Symonds vs. Cameron Gwynn, Copeland West vs. Paul Flateau, Jim Santo vs. Keith Fleetwood, Austin Jacobs vs. Jeff Elledge, and Ray Spofford vs. John Martin.

Flight II pairings break down as follows: Kent Hinton vs. Danny Feagin, John Wolfenden vs. Allen Wells, Dave Perkins vs. John Salmons, Bill Luke vs. Michael Hudson, John Skidmore vs. Travis Wilkinson, Ron Taylor vs. Billy Crews, Jim Moody vs. Bill Mutchie and Curtis West vs. Lucas Bennett.

First-round matches must be played by June 16…

Lions Club tournament Saturday at the Muni. Organizers are hoping a strong turnout and deserved support for a wonderful cause will take place at Saturday’s “Support A Vision” benefit scramble.

Sponsored by the Palatka Lions Club, the tournament at the Municipal Course is earmarking proceeds to the community’s less fortunate who need some help in receiving the give the gift of good vision.

Cost is $55, with lunch and prizes included. Shotgun start goes off at 9:30 a.m. Long drive, putting contest, closest to the pin and prizes for the top three squads are part of the deal.

PWGA winds up for the year. The Palatka Women’s Golf Association drew the curtain on their 2019 season last Thursday, with the final play day called “creative golf”. Sandy Smith, Pat Hain and Joyce Oliver held down the top three positions, respectively. Hain was also closest to the pin champ on No. 18.

The association will continue to play informally during the summer, teeing off each Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Anyone wishing to play is asked to make sure and have a partner lined up…

South Putnam news. Last week’s scrambles at The Oaks both produced ties for stop spots, with the teams of Bill Bass, Don Fesperman and Rosemary Dreesen, along with the squad of Judy Reddick, Will Parker, Ken Click and Dave Essler both coming in at 31 to share honors at the May 29 gathering. Essler was CTP champ on No. 2.

Tying for first May 31 with a 33 scorecard were the teams of Larry McKenzie, Debbie Peterson, John Willken and Dave Essler, along with the trio of Kurt Frazee, Randy Peterson and Chuck DePew. Chuck Blake won closest to the pin on No. 2…

Twilight Scramble results. Ron Taylor, Tom Sykes, Curtis West and Randy Werkheiser carded seven under par to win last Thursday’s Twilight Scramble at the Municipal Course. The winners also picked up a skin on No. 6 as well.

The nine-hole scramble is held every Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $20.
