Local Golf: Once again, players brave bad weather for a worthy cause
Like the recent Lee Conlee House Tournament, last Saturday’s “This Bud’s For You” event was a chilly affair.
And like the Lee Conlee event, the weather didn’t stop a sizeable crowd from showing up to render their support at the Municipal Course. Sponsored by Salt Springs’ VFW Post 10208, some 12 teams took part, braving raw conditions that improved dramatically as soon as competition ended.
Firing 10 under par to win it all was the team of Glen Molander, Bob Henry, Danny Owens and Sinny Molander.
Runners-up at 63 after cards were matched were Jim Moody, Charles Armstrong, Wayne Johnson and Jim Hutton. The duo of Jack Roig and Gary Howe also finished at 63.
Charlie Green was Straightest Drive Champ on No. 2, while Danny Owens went home with the closest to the pin prize on No. 6. Long drive winner on No. 9 was Gary Howe, while Bedford Greene claimed the putting contest prize…
Christmas Eve skins at the Muni. There’s a skins game on the board for what should be a gang of golfers, set for Sunday, Christmas Eve at the Municipal Course.
It’s net and gross skins, giving every skill level a shot at going home a winner. Play before 1 p.m. with someone else in the tournament. Cost is $20 plus regular fees. There’s also closest to the pin prizes on Nos. 3 and 16…
Superintendent’s Revenge on taps at MC. Bloody Marys and ridiculous pin placements will again usher in the New Year at the Palatka Course in the form of the Superintendent’s Revenge Tournament.
In addition to pin placements that are fortunately found only once a year, tee boxes on Nos. 3 , 7 and 18 will be backed up to add to the fun Jan. 1. Throw out our worst net score to par on each side. Format is individual net score, plus net and gross skins. Closest to the pin winners get a dozen Pro-V balls. Bloody Marys will be available to get things off on a good foot.
Last year’s winner was Tyler Anderson, who posted net 33-33—66. A shot behind tied for second were brothers Tom and Jim Murray…
Play any time before 11 a.m., as long as a fellow competitor is in the group. As well, PMGA membership fees must be paid in order to have a handicap and get you in the game…
Ladies Day results. Last week’s game for the Palatka Women’s Golf Association was Nassau, with Rita Prince winning the front nine, Bea Roeper claimed the back side and Joyce Oliver went home as overall champ. Roeper was closest to the pin winner on No. 18 as well.
South Putnam news. Rosemary Dreesen, Larry McKenzie and Bob Stites carded 31 to win the Dec. 13 scramble at Fruitland’s The Oaks Golf Club. Next at 34 was the threesome of Dan Essler, Phil Stites and Judy Reddick. McKenzie and Dreesen both knocked in their second shots on No. 12 to tie for CTP honors.
On Dec. 15, it was Steve Hink, Bill Bass, Bob Bonar and Jeannie Bonar firing 30 to go home as winners. Elaine Morey was closest to the pin champ on No. 8.
Danny Hood’s golf column appears every Wednesday in the Palatka Daily News.
