Local Golf: PHS benefit draws crowd

Support for Palatka High School’s football and cheerleading squads thrives, as evidenced by the turnout at Saturday’s benefit golf tournament.

A jammed field of 23 teams showed up at the Municipal Course to help raise money for the Panthers, who open their regular season Aug. 26 with a homestand against Ocala Vanguard.

Appropriately enough, the winning squad had a distinct PHS flavor as Panther golf coach Lucas Bennett and former standouts Tanner Tipton and Kyle Coleman  were joined by Clint Dixon to turn back the big field.

The champs came in at a sizzling 18 under par, three shots clear of runners-up Randy Werkheiser, Tom Sykes and Jim Keeley. Also at 55 but taking third place after cards were matched were Spanky Aaron, Jerry Broadrick, Brett Daniels and Allen Anderson.

Jana Wilhite (No. 12), Jim Santo (No. 6) were closest-to-the-pin winners, while Taran Tipton was long drive champ on No. 9…

19th Hole Club seeks support. Palatka High School’s golf program needs you as the 2016 season is just around the corner.

The popular “19th Hole Club,” established several years ago, earmarks its funds to cover the approximate $300 per player needed to equip the Panthers for competition. This figure also includes the cost of a junior membership to the Municipal Course for each player.

Names of those who contribute $50 or more to the cause appear on a banner displayed throughout the year in the Municipal Course clubhouse.

The 2015 season found three members of the Panthers boys’ squad advancing to the regional tournament at St. Augustine’s Palencia Golf Club.
