Local Golf: PMGA boosts Muni by $9.2K
As anyone who has played the Municipal Course lately knows, the historic track is in very good shape. This is due to the good work of course superintendent Dana Anderson and his crew, and the continual generosity of the Palatka Men’s Golf Association.
Over the last year, the PMGA has given $9,256 to the MC, most of which was used to purchase the very expensive products needed to keep the course – and in particular, the greens – looking good.
“With the PMGA’s help we have been able to use a new product called Nimitz to apply to our greens,” says Anderson. “We now feel we have the advantage over the biggest problem that has plagued the greens in the past – the severe nematode infestation.”
Anderson says that there is now almost 100 percent Bermuda coverage on all greens, and that overseeding on the greens, tees, collars and approaches begins next Monday…
VFW tourney Saturday at the Muni. Putnam’s military veterans will take center stage at Saturday’s 5th Annual Golf Appreciation Tournament.
Sponsored by VFW Post 3349, the scramble begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at the Municipal Course. Cost to play is $50 per person. Lunch and an awards ceremony will be held after play at the VFW lodge, located at 3201 Reid Street in Palatka.
Cash prizes of $75 go out to the winners of closest to the pin on Nos. 6 and 12.
Proceeds from the event are earmarked to assist various veteran-related programs in the county, according to tournament coordinator Gene Nieman.
Nieman says an ROTC Honor Guard will conduct a ceremony prior to the start of play.

President’s Cup is Dec. 3-4. The final Palatka Men’s Golf Association tournament for 2016 is set for Dec. 3-4 at the Municipal Course.
The President’s Cup is 36 holes of individual stroke play (net) in this long-running competition.
Defending champ is Palatka High golf coach Lucas Bennett, who posted net 65-60—125 en route to the title.

South Putnam news. A fundraiser for Putnam County sheriff’s candidate Gator DeLoach was held Oct. 22 at Fruitland’s The Oaks Golf Club.
Tying for top honors at 10 under par were the teams of Justin Morgan, Chuck Blake, L.E. Clark and Rocky Johnson, along with the foursome of Dale Glen, Ron Jenkins, Marker Garner and Jim Elliott. Straightest drive champ on No. 4 was Clint Swartz. L.E. Clark was closest to the pin winner on both Nos. 2 and 8.
The Oct. 28 scramble ended in a tie with the foursomes of Don Frazee, Will Parker, Mark Sandoval and Fran Mara, along with Rosemary Dreesen, Ken Thompson, Randy Peterson and Jerry Peterson coming in at 33. Rosemary Dreesen was CTP on No. 2.
A Glo-Ball tournament is set for Saturday, Nov. 5 at The Oaks.
Cost to play in the nine-hole event is $25 for members, $35 for guests. The fee also includes dinner, which will be served at 6:30 p.m. Play will begin at 7:30 p.m…
Ladies Day results. Winning last Thursday’s points game for the Palatka Women’s Golf Association was Pat Hain. Joyce Oliver took second place. Hain also was closest to the pin on No. 18.
