Local Golf: Tipton breaks par, claims another club championship
Bringing in the only sub-par round of the weekend, Tanner Tipton picked up another Club Championship title Sunday at the Municipal Course.
With his opening round 71 putting him into a five-way tie with Copeland West, Jim Santo, Kyle Coleman and Randy Werkheiser, Tipton fired 35-32—67 on Sunday, giving him a five shot cushion over Coleman, who shot 71-72 to take second spot in the Championship Flight.
Winning First Flight was David DeHart (78-75—153), while Keith Fleetwood (82-74—156) finished in the runner-up slot.
Backing up his recent Memorial Match Play win, Werkheiser went home with the Second Flight crown, shooting 71-79—150. Next was Kevin Orr (72-80—152). David Perkins (82-78—160) was an easy winner in Third Flight, as runner-up Ron Mullis (84-82—166) was six shots back.
John Salmons posted back-to-back rounds of 92 to take fourth flight, while the Senior Net division was claimed by Howard Sheeks (77-73—150).
Closest-to-the-pin winners on Saturday were Reece Symonds (No. 3), Coleman (Nos. 6 and 16), Kevin Durscher (No. 12) and Orr (No. 14). Sunday it was Gary Alvers (No. 3), Mullis (No. 6), Fleetwood (No. 12), Coleman (No. 14) and Kent Hinton (No. 16).

Third Street Charities tourney will be a big one. A turnout rivaling the crowd that took part in the recent Tracy Brown Memorial looks to be a sure thing when the Sept. 22 Third Street Charities comes to the Municipal Course.
Some 50 twosomes have put their names on the dotted line for the event, whose proceeds will go to assisting a number of local charities that include, Junior Golf in Putnam, the Lee Conlee House, Putnam First Cancer Fund and Bread of Life.
Format is two-person scramble, with all sorts of prizes and goodies handed out to participants. Cost is $60 per player, with prizes for first, fifth and tenth places.

October “Blitz” coming to The Oaks. It’s called a “Blitz,” but lots of folks know it as a points game. Whatever the name, Fruitland’s The Oaks begins a weekend series that should be a lot fun.
Starting next month, every Saturday and Sunday will play host to the Blitz ... a two-person blind draw points game that begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Other goodies like closest to the pin is also part of the game.

Ladies Day results. The Palatka Women’s Golf Association kicked off its new season last Thursday at the MC, with the opening day format three pre-selected holes returned to par, minus ½ handicap.

South Putnam news. Rosemary Dreesen, Curt Frazee, Dave Essler and Jerry Peterson shot 34 to win the Sept. 5 scramble at The Oaks Golf Club. Dreesen was also good for closest to the pin on No. 8.
The Sept. 7 scramble was won by Judy Reddick, Jack Dreesen and Jerry Peterson, who came in at 34 as well. Fran Mara was CTP on No. 2.
