Prep roundup: Panthers roll over Bradford

Tyrius Thomas and Cameron Chandler each hit four three-pointers and the Palatka boys basketball team used a big second quarter to beat Bradford 65-48 in a Saturday night road game.

It was the Panthers’ fourth game in five days – a good comeback from a Friday night loss at St. Augustine, according to PHS coach Bryant Oxendine.

“We played Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday,” he said. “Them coming through that and bouncing back after St. Augustine was good to see.”

Thomas finished with 21 points, hitting all seven of his free-throw attempts. Chandler had 13 points and Demare Purifoy scored 12 points for the Panthers, who take a 14-8 record into tonight’s 6 o’clock St. Johns River Athletic Conference game at home against Bartram Trail.

Palatka was strong again from the free-throw line, a 16-for-22 performance despite one player’s 0-4 showing. The Panthers ked 12-9, 33-19 and 48-35 at the quarter breaks.

Mitchell McKinnon collected eight rebounds and blocked two shots for PHS. Purifoy had seven rebounds and a block. Chamar Dumas came up with six assists and three steals. Thomas made four steals.

n Interlachen took just four wrestlers to the Diamondback Duals last weekend at Belleview,  where they went 1-7 but avoided last place by beating Dunnellon.

The Rams’ leaders were senior Brennan Wykoff (182-pound weight class) and junior Corey Atkins (195), each going 7-1. Junior Cade Mason (138) and freshman Dalton Cady (145) were both 20-6, though Cady claimed his first varsity pinfall.

Interlachen hosts Palatka Wednesday at 6 p.m.

n Jamar Danzler (160 pounds), Dale Green (145) and heavyweight Ira Dixon all managed 1-2 records for Palatka in the deep and talented Flagler Palm Coast Rotary Invitational last weekend.

The Panthers’ Marqise Hill (152) finished third and Drevon Wallace (106) was fourth.
