Prep roundup: Raiders shake rust, edge St. Joseph, 2-1
The Crescent City High School boys soccer team had not played for nine days.
And coach Jeff Lease said it showed a little bit in the team’s first game back after the break Thursday night at home against St. Augustine St. Joseph Academy.
In a tightly contested match, it took a player who had not scored a goal all season to deliver the go-ahead goal for the Raiders.
Hector Cruz’s first goal of the season off a scramble in front of the Flashes’ net with 15 minutes left in the game gave the Raiders a 2-1 victory over St. Joseph to make them the first soccer program in the county with 10 victories this season.
The Raiders (10-5-2) had scored in the first half to take a 1-0 lead when Renato Garcia scored his county-best 15th goal off an Alex Galvan assist just 12 minutes into the game.
Both Max Aboytes and Elias Segura stopped six shots in the win with Aboytes giving up St. Joseph’s goal.
The Raiders will be at it again tonight in Gainesville to face P.K. Yonge in a District 5-2A match.
n Host Halifax Academy got points from 10 players and used a big third quarter to pull away from Peniel Baptist Academy, 83-57.
Down a point after one quarter and 42-33 at halftime, the Warriors had no answer for the Knights’ 25-6 third period.
Peniel’s Matthew Heinecker drained five threes on a 20-point night that also included four rebounds, four blocks, three assists and two steals. Gage Tibbs had 19 points, including four treys, and Daunte Morgan scored 15.
n Palatka fell victim to 46 turnovers and 10-for-26 shooting from the free-throw line in a 57-51 loss to visiting St. Augustine.
Elexus Banks scored 17 points, claimed 11 rebounds and made eight steals for the Panthers (6-11), who took a 38-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
Lar’Quiera Watts had nine points and 11 rebounds, Kavayshia McCormick scored 11 points and Jayshia Edwards had 11 boards for Palatka.
St. Augustine’s Briana Green led all scorers with 27 points.
