Prep soccer: Raider boys' first win for new coach
With two weeks left before the boys soccer season started, Jeff Lease found out he was about to become the first Crescent City High School head coach not named John Thomas.
Good thing he’s worked with the program with Thomas as an assistant.
“I’ve been around the kids around six or seven years,” Lease said. “They al know me and what we did was keep the same things that coach Thomas had done with them.”
That was good, too. The Raiders defeated Newberry, 6-0, in the District 5-2A opener for both teams at home on Tuesday night for his first career win.
“The kids I have love soccer down here and they know as the season goes on, they can get better,” said Lease, pointing to 1-0 preseason losses against Flagler Palm Coast and Palm Coast Matanzas. “We lost our two preseason games, but I felt we played well. Our guys came out and played hard (Tuesday night). They are easy to work with.”
Axel Ocampo had a big opener with two goals and two assists, while Alex Galvan added two goals. Jose Mancilla had a goal and an assist, Manny Dominguez put in a goal and Alejo Cruz and Christian Lopez each added assists for the Raiders.
Max Aboytes and Jesus Escebedo each had one save to combine on the shutout.
“We played well,” Lease said. “It was very good to see.”
n With goalie Courtney Mikell was knocked out of the game with a possible concussion, Palatka could not handle the onslaught by host Orange Park Ridgeview, which defeated Palatka, 8-0, in a District 4-3A matchup.
Mikell gave up two goals in the first half and stopped 10 shots before being knocked out of the game. Abrielle Robertson, playing her first game, had a difficult time with the Ridgeview offense, giving up the rest of the goals and stopping two shots.
The Panthers are 0-4 overall and 0-4 in the district.
n Visiting Palm Coast Matanzas defeated Interlachen, 8-0, dropping the Rams to 1-4.
Newcomer Kaci Polk gave up three goals and had six saves, while Amanda Quinby came in and gave up the other five goals while stopping 10 shots.
n Newberry scored four goals in each half on different goalies in an 8-0 District 5-2A victory over host Crescent City, dropping the Raiders to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the district.
Lisette Aboytes and Anayeli Baltazar each gave up four goals with Aboytes stopping 10 shots and Baltazar stopping two.
