Winter is coming, and the Palatka Daily News needs volunteers to transform a pocket of Putnam County into a snowy wonderland.

The second annual Snow Day will take place from 3–7 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds, 118 Fairgrounds Road in East Palatka. There is no charge for the event.

The event will include face painting, food trucks and family-friendly vendors. Living up to its name, Snow Day will bring icy precipitation to subtropic Putnam to give people the chance to experience the fun of snow without having to shovel driveways and sidewalks.

With the help of Positively Putnam partners, the Daily News is expanding the event to build upon last year’s event but at a new location, Publisher Jennifer Moates said.

“After such a great success last year, we are excited to bring Snow Day back to the community again this year,” she stated.

Last year, there was a snow slide for kids to descend, but there will be a second slide for younger kids to enjoy this year, Moates added.

The Daily News is looking for volunteers to help during Snow Day, and anyone interested can call Director of Advertising Mary Kaye Wells at 386-312-5210.

“Any amount of time an individual or civic group can spare would be great,” Moates said.

There are still spots available for vendors, Wells said, and any interested vendors should also call her to reserve a spot.

During the 2022 Snow Day, children spent the day having snowball fights with one another at the Palatka riverfront and racing down ice slides. For some children, it was the first time they had seen snow, parents said.

Moates said she can’t wait to repeat the experience and expose other native Floridians to snow for the first time.

“We look forward to playing in the snow again,” Moates stated.
