The Larimer Arts Center in Palatka has for many years served as the mainstay for local artists who have a love of art in all forms. It’s a tradition that continues to thrive.

The next gallery event at the Larimer is a photography exhibit titled “Through the Artists Lens” with an opening reception from 6–8 p.m. Friday at 216 Reid St. in Palatka.

The exhibit will feature the work of area photographers, Jim Bailey, Hollis Bliss, Tom Deputy, Rita Fullerton, Brian Keith and Imani Klein.

Admission is free to the public. The exhibit will run through May 12.

This show is the brainchild of Denise Aikens, the executive director of the Arts Council of Greater Palatka, according to Dan Askew, the Larimer gallery curator who serves as studio art professor at Florida School of the Arts in Palatka.

“She is a fan of the works of Tom Deputy, Jim Bailey and Brian Keith and suggested a group photo show of photographers living and working in Putnam County,” Askew said. “I came across the work of Hollis Bliss and Imani Klein through the Gathering Artists of Putnam group who represent a more contemporary take on photography by using their cellphones, which nowadays can have technical capabilities that rival professional cameras.”

Aiken said Deputy, Keith and Bailey had their photography displayed at the Larimer a few years back.

“The work was fabulous and many of the photos show the absolute beauty of Putnam County and the amazing flora, fauna and architecture,” she said. “Through the eyes of all these photographers is exciting.”

Askew said Bailey recommended Fullerton’s work be displayed in the show.

“I look forward to seeing her work, and the work of all these photographers,” Askew said.

Aiken expects the exhibit to be a wonderful visual show and is thankful for Askew and his continued dedication to keeping the gallery at the Larimer full of art of all kinds.

“This show is going to be sure to please,” she said.

Askew believes photography is an art form most people can appreciate.

“From the instant slice of life that a camera can capture to an affinity for the Florida landscape to the abstract qualities of texture and light, there is something for everyone,” he said.
