Escape to Pomona Park and cool off with an ice cream cone or stop for a bite to eat at 12 Below Zero.

The new ice cream shop opened in April, owner Renni Thompson said, but they have much more than just ice cream. Thompson said he has always owned restaurants but, living in Crescent City, he realized there was nowhere close by for children to go. Thus came 12 Below Zero Ice Cream & More.

“We get a lot of flow from Welaka and Crescent City,” Thompson said. “So, it’s great for all the little communities around here.”

The shop is located at 1749 S. U.S. 17 and offers 46 ice cream flavors – 10 of which cater to people with dietary restrictions. 12 Below has also started serving lunch with different sandwich choices. The shop is known for gyros, Thompson said.

Crescent City resident Bob Rundle said he and his wife and I dropped by the ice cream shop a few days ago to try it

“My choice was Butter Pecan in a waffle cone,” Rundle said in an email.

“I have to tell you it was some of the best Butter Pecan ice cream I have ever tasted. Fresh, crispy frozen pecans in every delicious bite. My wife enjoyed a mint chocolate chip and pistachio double-dip cone.”

He said the staff behind the counter were “welcoming, polite and happy to serve up these cold treats on a hot south Putnam afternoon.”

He and his wife made a second trip just a couple of days after that first stop to try a hot fudge sundae and a chocolate milkshake.

This spruced-up business is a welcome addition to Pomona Park,” Rundle said.

The owner said he and his staff already released they have outgrown their current building in Pomona Park. But the business has been “10-fold more” than what he thought it was going to be.

And Thompson’s favorite part of the business?

“Seeing the kids leave so happy.”
