A San Mateo resident has entered the running to become Putnam County’s new tax collector.

Republican Brittany Goodson filed her candidacy papers March 14, according to the Supervisor of Elections Office. She is competing against fellow Republicans Brenda Bridges, the current deputy tax collector, and Sydney Myers.

The three are competing to fill the role Republican Linda Myers has held since being elected in 2012 and winning reelection in 2016 and 2020. As of Tuesday evening, Linda Myers has not filed to run for reelection.

If only Republicans are entered in the race after the qualifying period ends in June, the tax collector contest will be decided during the Aug. 20 primary, where all Putnam voters, no matter their party affiliation, have a say.

If candidates who aren’t Republicans qualify to run, whoever wins the contest between Goodson, Bridges and Sydney Myers – which will be open to only Republican voters – will compete in the Nov. 5 general election.
