A 43-year-old Hawthorne man died Easter morning after trying to pass a vehicle by moving to the opposite lane and hitting another vehicle, Florida Highway Patrol reported.

The man was reportedly traveling south on State Road 21 in a Chevrolet Trailblazer around 11:58 a.m. when he “attempted to pass a vehicle that was traveling directly in front of it.”

Highway Patrol said the Trailblazer traveled into the northbound lane of State Road 21 to pass the vehicle in front of him but the Trailblazer’s right side hit the front of a Toyota Highlander in the northbound lane. A 34-year-old Hawthorne man had been reportedly driving the Highlander.

The Trailblazer came to a final rest on the road shoulder to the east, facing southeast, while the Highlander “came to final rest partially obstructing the northbound lane of State Road 21 facing east,” the agency reported.

The 43-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene, and the 34-year-old man sustained serious injuries.
