The GFWC Woman’s Club of Palatka is having its annual Azaleas For The Community fundraiser sale.

As of today, there are seven varieties to choose from, including red ruffle, lavender formosa, red formosa, Southern charm, white ruffle, Mrs. G.G. Gerbing and Little John. The George Taber and Conversation Piece varieties are sold out.

The cost for each 1-gallon plant is $6. Preorders online deadline March 2. Visit gfwcpalatka.com/azalea-city-marketplace to order and pay. Pickup is noon-4 p.m. March 4 at the Woman’s Club at 600 S. 13th St., Palatka. A few extra plants may be available on the pickup date.

According to club member Dee Parker, the project is way for the Woman’s Club to help beautify the community.

“Our annual sale has been going on for 10 years,” she said. “We have sold more than 19,000 azaleas to the community.”

Parker said the sale gets more popular year-after-year.

“Palatka was called the Azalea City and the GFWC Woman’s Club of Palatka is trying to bring that title back,” she said. “Our city has always been known for our beautiful azaleas.”

Parker said that in 1936, members of the Woman’s Club of Palatka club raised funds, which bought the first 3,000 azalea plants for the Ravine Gardens State Park.

“Our community is most beautiful in spring when the azaleas are in bloom. As a community service, we sell azaleas at a very reduced price, this helps make our naturally beautiful area even more beautiful.”

Proceeds from the sale will help fund two $1,000 scholarships, which are awarded to local graduating high school seniors each year. For details, contact Parker at 937-3196.
