A Republican candidate became the second person to file his intent to run for a Putnam County Board of Commissioners seat, according to the Supervisor of Elections Office.

Earlier this week, Crescent City resident Jeovanny “Geo” Palencia submitted to the Elections Office his paperwork to seek the board’s District 1 seat. Commissioner Bill Pickens has served in the position since he was elected in 2016.

At the end of June, Democratic candidate Harry L. Banks, the son of Crescent City Commissioner Harry Banks, filed his intent to run for the District 1 seat.

If no other Democrat or Republican qualifies to run for the position, Palencia, Banks and any other nonpartisan candidate will face off in the Nov. 5, 2024, general election. If any other Democrats or Republicans vie for the District 1 seat, there will be Democratic and/or Republican primaries to determine who will be the partisan candidates in the general election.

As of Friday, Pickens had not filed to run again for the county seat.
