A Crescent City resident is trying for a third time since last year to replace an embattled city commissioner.

On Wednesday, Christopher Coleman filed his candidacy paperwork with Putnam County Elections Office to seek the Group 3 Crescent City Commission seat. As of Wednesday evening, Coleman is the only person seeking the position, which Commissioner Cynthia Burton is occupying.

The race, which is nonpartisan, could be yet another face-off between Coleman and Burton, who fought off two recall attempts in 2023.

Coleman won a recall election against Burton in May, but an appeals court in June reversed the lower court’s decision to allow the recall to proceed.

When Burton faced another recall later in June, Coleman, who signed the petition to oust Burton, filed his intent to win her seat if she were recalled. She wasn’t; a judge ruled in Burton’s favor in September.

This year’s primary will be Aug. 20, and the general election will be Nov. 5.
