Putnam County residents 40 or older are encouraged to turn out Thursday for vaccine distributions in Palatka, and they don't need to make an appointment to do so.

Mary Garcia, administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Putnam County, said the county vaccination site, 1101 Husson Ave., will be giving out doses of the Moderna vaccine 9 a.m. – noon and 1–3 p.m. for walk-ups.

“We have an incredible team,” Garcia said. “… This is going to be a trial for us.”

Residents must have an ID with them to receive a vaccine. Garcia said residents who have already received their first vaccination will be called to schedule a second shot.

Thursday's Moderna vaccinations are mostly reserved for people who have not yet received their first dose of the vaccine.

No new coronavirus deaths were reported Wednesday in Putnam County, but the number of cases rose by 24 to 6,051, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Garcia said she and her team thought Thursday would be a good day to try open distributions. If all goes well, she said, more events such as this could be a possibility.

“We thought right before the (Easter) holiday, people might want to get the vaccine,” Garcia said. “… We’re excited and we’ll see how it works.”
