The police are investigating an early morning shooting that has left one man dead, according to Palatka officials.

Tyrone Colay, 34, was pronounced dead at HCA Florida Putnam, according to a Facebook post from the Palatka Police Department.

His death followed a domestic disturbance at an East Oak Hill Drive residence that was reported to authorities at 1:30 a.m., the police department stated.

Palatka resident, Regina Daniels, 53, reportedly told authorities she shot Colay and has been cooperating with detectives, authorities said. No arrests had been made by noon Monday, Capt. Matt Newcomb said.

“Right now, it’s still very much under investigation,” he said.

Newcomb said authorities believe Colay and Daniels resided in the same residence. The shooting, which could be heard over a 911 call, took place after a domestic dispute escalated, according to the police department.

The shooting happened in the backyard of the home where Daniels and Colay lived.

The agency said its detectives are working the case with assistance from the State Attorney’s Homicide Investigations Unit. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement Crime Scene Unit is processing the crime scene, according to the police.

While the Palatka Police Department post spelled Daniels’ name as “Regena,” the Palatka Daily News found social media records and Putnam County Clerk of Courts Office records linked to Colay and Daniels with her name spelled “Regina.”

While the case has been labeled domestic and authorities say the two lived together, Newcomb was not sure Monday afternoon whether Daniels and Colay were married.

Court records show Daniels filed for child support payments from Colay in 2011. The case was reopened in 2018 and closed again in March of this year, court records show.

Despite no arrests being made shortly before 1 p.m. Monday, Newcomb said an arrest could happen but stressed that Daniels has been cooperating with authorities.

He said investigators are still working to tie down loose ends.
