Law enforcement officers are investigating the fatal shooting of a man that occurred this evening in Palatka, officials said.

One person died in the shooting, which took place on the 700 block of North 16th Street, according to the Palatka Police Department. Capt. Matt Newcomb said the agency was notified about the shooting around 7:15 p.m. today.

A little more than an hour later, Newcomb said, information was scarce because the investigation had just begun. While he confirmed only one person was shot, the name and age of the victim was not yet available as of publication time.

No one else was shot or otherwise injured, he said.

“We’ve had an adult male – that’s all that I know – that’s been fatally shot,” Newcomb said. “We don’t have any information on a suspect right now.”

A department Facebook post regarding the incident encouraged people to avoid the area where the shooting happened to allow investigators to properly work the scene.

Shortly after the shooting, Newcomb said police department detectives were headed to the scene. He also anticipated the arrival of Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials, who would be assisting the police with the investigation.

“They’re on their way from Jacksonville,” Newcomb said of the FDLE officers. “I have detectives en route from their homes.”

The police department is asking the public to come forward with any information they can provide regarding the shooting, according to the Facebook post.

People with information about the case are asked to call the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office at 386-329-0801 and ask to speak with police Capt. Tobby Williams or Detective Sgt. Colten Lee.

People can also call Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 888-277-8477.
