A familiar face is once again vying to win a seat on the Putnam County Board of Commissioners.

Satsuma resident Douglas Hays filed his paperwork last week to run for the District 1 board seat in 2024, according to the Supervisor of Elections Office.

Hays, who has tried to get elected to the board at least four times, will be running as a Republican next year, according to the Elections Office.

He hopes to fill the vacancy that will be left when Commissioner Bill Pickens, who has announced he will not seek re-election, leaves office at the completion of his term in November 2024.

Competing against Hays is fellow Republican Jeovanny “Geo” Palencia and Democrat Harry Banks, both of Crescent City.

Hays, Palencia and any other Republican who qualifies to run for the District 1 seat will compete in a primary contest next year.

The winner of that contest will compete in the Nov. 5, 2024, general election against Banks if he is the only Democrat in the running or whoever wins the Democratic primary. All no-party affiliation or write-in candidates would also be on the November ballot.

Hays ran as a write-in candidate for the District 4 seat in 2022 and competed as a no-party affiliation candidate for the District 3 seat in 2020, 2018 and 2016, according to election records.
